Friel Unveils Pledge for Community Renewal
For Immediate Release
October 13, 2010
Brantford, Ontario: Mayoral candidate, Chris Friel unveiled the various components, which make up his “Pledge for Community Renewal” today at Charlotte Villa Retirement Centre to underscore his commitment to seniors if re-elected as Mayor in the October 25th election.
While Friel applauded the great work that has been done for the development of the Master Aging Plan, he will use it as a foundation, though he believes there is much yet to do with its implementation and recommended the hiring of a Seniors’ Care Ombudsman to navigate next steps, and expedite the consultation and implementation of the plan, in addition to giving area seniors a great resource person to contact in the immediate future.
Friel commented, “A truly liveable city knows that the quality of life for seniors and youth is the true measure of success. I want our seniors to be able to make their own choices about remaining in their homes as long as possible with the help of community resources or deciding if and when it’s time to get more help in a formalized setting. Too many seniors are falling through the cracks of our society and that’s why I pledge to make seniors care issues a priority during my term as Mayor if elected.”
Economic renewal for the City was also another key theme through the creation of Brantford’s Economic Innovation Commission to replace the current Economic Development Board. Friel noted, “Bureaucrats don’t speak entrepreneur; they speak barriers. It’s time to take the power out of City Hall and give it back to the people, the local entrepreneurial heroes that have chosen Brantford for their city of choice to work, raise a family and thrive. I pledge to renew, reinvent and re-energize our city’s economic outlook through a number of new and creative ways.”
Another area where Friel believes needs renewal is within each individual ward/neighbourhood, which he aims to do through the establishment of a new “Community Action Network”. With a goal to influence the social, cultural, economic and physical life of neighborhoods and the community, annually each Ward would be allocated a set amount of money that Councillors can facilitate through local consultation to fund special projects allocated within their Ward.
“The most important choice you make is where to live – where’s the logic of having a Councillor in Ward 5 deem what the priority is in Ward 1? Councillors should be in tune with their constituent needs and desires and should be granted the financial means to be able to make a difference in the lives of their own neighbourhoods, in addition to working for the global good of Brantford as a whole,” Friel added.
As far as our Six Nations relationship, Friel pledged to get back on the path of renewal that was established during his 9 year tenure as Mayor, which suffered a dramatic set back through the recent injunction. In addition to re-establishing “Council to Council” relationships as he did during his mandate, Friel is proposing education relationship building programs to begin right in the school system to foster greater understanding and tolerance.
Friel concluded by pledging to make Brantford’s community renewal an example of municipal excellence as a model for not only Canada, but internationally as well.
